May 24, 2021 Update:
The information on this page in regard to independent access is no longer applicable.
August 28, 2020 Update: Some potentially sad news for many of the DCSA "family": Due to owners' imminent retirement (and possibly moving away from the DFW area), Freedom Plans are to be downsized and/or phased out. Local police departments' plans will be honored through their payment periods of March 31, 2021. Citizen members' will have through May 23, 2021 to use up all of the hours on respective plans. If time blocks are not used up before May 24, those who purchased Freedom Plans for the months of May, June, July, August and/or Sept. of 2020 will have the option to request pro-rated refunds for applicable time not able to be used in those months of 2021. Any Freedom Plans issued to new or existing members will have an expiration date of May 23, 2021. Thereafter, the facilities will likely be kept operational for an undetermined amount of time for private training and/or testing at times of mutual convenience.
March 16, 2021
Another “update” here as we just passed the 25 year anniversary of DPS’ certification of the range for CHL testing.
And, sadly, continue toward the “phase out” of DCSA’s options.
Contrary to what some perceived (or erroneously obtained by word of mouth) after my August 2020 letter, the range is not necessarily going to be “completely closed down” on May 23 with some of our “retirements”.
May 24 is simply a date that needed to be selected when Freedom Plan Members will no longer have independent access – and I can be away for long periods of time without concern for operations & maintenance. It will also open up the possibly of more easily leasing the center portion of the property for use as something other than a very small gun range.
Depending upon if, when and how far away my wife and I move or travel, I may or may not continue doing private classes, shooting skills tune ups, retired LEO annual qualifications, etc. And, contingent upon TPWD’s policies later this year with the Covid panicdemic, possibly even some scheduled hunter education “field day” classes (of which, DCSA has conducted more than any other facility in entire state).
In conclusion, we thank you all for the business and good times in supporting my passions over the years. Y’all be safe out there and possibly check the web site occasionally for further updates.
Best regards, Lonnie Ward
Freedom Plan Memberships
All Freedom Plan members are allowed to come and go as they please between 8AM and 10PM, 7 days a week. Freedom Plan members with a Texas LTC (License to Carry) and Law Enforcement Officers are allowed to come and go independently 24/7.
Members can independently shoot handguns through .45 caliber, pistol caliber carbines, shotguns with buckshot only and .22 rimfire rifles.
Handgun draw and fire practice is permissible as well as (controlled) rapid fire. See FAQ page answers to other common questions.
NRA-endorsed self defense insurance is included for members who have a current Freedom Plan and a Texas LTC..
To become a member:
1-hour Membership Orientation
Our 1-hour orientation is called The Fundamentals of Firearm Safety and is the first hour of most regularly scheduled classes, commonly following a 30-minute "Open House" for those who want to tour the facility. The orientation includes an overview of safe gun handling, ammunition malfunction terminology and liability release paperwork. If the times listed on the Home page here do not fit for local law enforcement officers OR Texas handgun license holders seeking to get a DCSA Freedom Plan Membership, send an e-mail to Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com for a possible appointment for a private orientation and affiliated paperwork.
Freedom Plans
Dec. 4, 2020 Update: Based upon the Freedom Plan access being completely phased out by May 24, 2021, any existing members or new members will need to project how many times they plan to shoot through May 23. New member cards will be issued based upon projected number of visits and prepaid at $15.00 (plus 6.25% sales tax) per lane per person per visit for up to an hour each time.
KISS method: $15.94 per person per range session. No pro-rated refunds on any new or renewed memberships after Dec. 1. (Use it or lose it.)
DCSA's Freedom Plans are geared primarily for Texas LTC (License to Carry) people, FFDOs (Federal Flight Deck Officers: pilots) and Law Enforcement Officers who want to independently stay "tuned up" with their handguns. Recreational shooters are also welcome. To purchase a Freedom Plan, come out for a scheduled Open House/Orientation. Or contact Lonnie at dcsa1996@yahoo.com for a possible appointment if you are unable to make any of the scheduled times fit.
Freedom Plan Options:
In the event the range is closed, sold or leased to another party before an annual membership expires, a portion of any fees above will be refunded based upon calendar days remaining.
Additional LTC holders in the same household (same address on LTCs) may be added to the primary member's Freedom Plan for $50 (+ 3.13 tax) per year, including the self defense insurance. Such couples may select a 12X plan and practice for approximately 30 minutes each 12 times in their year (assuming sharing the same stall if someone else happens to need to use the range at the same time). Other family members (with the same address on ID) may be added to a Freedom Plan for $25 (plus $1.56 tax) per person per year only if additional person(s) has completed an approved class and has current membership paperwork on file.
Safety is the #1 priority. The "DCSA Freedom Plan Rules and Procedures" page includes REQUIRED READING before beginning independent access to the range. (See the FAQ page here and the slideshow photos on Home page for a better understanding of how the classroom and range are set up.)
Self Defense Insurance Coverage
In conjunction with a special NRA-endorsed insurance policy, each of DCSA's five Freedom Plan levels includes reimbursement coverage of attorney fees for members with a current Freedom Plan and a current Texas License to Carry on file. The endorsement to DCSA's general liability insurance policy gives such members up to $50,000 of coverage if they have to use their handgun in lawful self defense. The policy provides reimbursement for criminal defense and/or civil defense if not charged with or not found guilty of a crime. A copy of the endorsement is available in the DCSA office for review or photocopy. This special endorsement has been a part of Freedom Plan memberships since 2007 and will continue to be included for as long as it can be reasonably obtained annually as a part of our general liability policy (up for renewal in June 2020). Any member who is involved in a serious self defense "ocurrance" should promptly contact Lonnie @dcsa996@yahoo.com as the insurance company will need to be made aware of at least the police report.
Guest Policy
Guests are not allowed. We want to keep the DCSA range safe for everyone, so only those who have completed a class from DCSA (or the 1-hour Membership Orientation), have a signed Liability Release on file, and have an active Freedom Plan are allowed to enter without an instructor present.
The only exception to this rule is as follows: Long-time DCSA members who now have extended family (former DCSA members) desiring to shoot when back in the area visiting should send e-mail well in advance to dcsa1996@yahoo.com for possible arrangements on renewed shooting privileges.
Local Law Enforcement Officers
Local LEOs whose departments have made arrangements (well in advance) - with DCSA for independent access may also be able to practice 24/7 at no additional cost. Officers with such interest should get approval from supervisor then:
(1) Read through this web page and the FAQ page on this web site
(2) Complete Liability Release and obtain door lock(s) combination
